What’s the Right Window and Door Material for Me?

One of the first things to consider when you decide to upgrade your windows and doors is what kind of material you want to use and deciding what’s right for you is important. In this blog, we want to try and outline the key differences between uPVC, Aluminium and Timber and some of the key factors to understand when making your choice.

Firstly uPVC. Originating in the 1930’s, it was popularised for its ability to effectively insulate heat and for its relatively low manufacturing cost. Those key features have only improved since then and today remains one of the most popular choices for consumers nationwide. In recent years uPVC technology has only improved to make it more durable, environmentally friendly, weather resistant and fire safe.  Some important factors to consider however when choosing uPVC; does the design fit with my current house style? If you’re living in a listed building you may want to check and see if uPVC is permissible. Despite this, uPVC is often a perfect fit for most homes and is almost always a viable choice for the money conscious buyer.

Slightly moving up the ladder of cost, Aluminium windows. Often the choice of newer design buildings, opting for the modern look. Of course, they come with their array of pros and cons. One major benefit of Aluminium is its ability to generally last longer than uPVC. This is shown in the difference in price but can be cost efficient over a long enough time frame. Additionally, Aluminium is highly customisable. This makes it a great choice for those on a budget but don’t want to compromise on design. However, Aluminium’s ability to insulate lacks in comparison to uPVC and with rising energy costs it’s an important characteristic to consider. Finally, Timber. First choice for those living in Victorian and Georgian style housing and looking to maintain that original look. Timber is the most expensive when it comes to the three aforementioned materials. This is because the process of manufacturing is the longest and has the most amount of human involvement during the process. However, if you’re looking for unmatched insulation, windows and doors that will last you 60 years+ and you’re wanting to add value to your property then timber is the material for you.
